The following is a recent interview of Adam Bowie, founder of Rush Hour Marketing Technology.  The interview was conducted by James Lamb of BoostCE – a marketing consultancy that currently is working with several Fortune 100 companies.  The interview was part of a series James prepared about email marketing experts.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

2. How long have you been using email as a marketing tool and how did you get started?

I learned email marketing the hard way when I started a daily deal site in the very early days of Groupon. The concept blew me away. I saw the enormous revenue potential and ROI of email marketing – a way to make money without having to sell a physical product.  Since those difficult days, I have done my best to learn all I can about email deliverability and email inbox placement, as everything we do for clients revolves around strategic email marketing. The roots of what we can accomplish lie in our ability to get emails delivered and have the email content be relevant to the subscriber.

3. What’s one thing you wish you’d known when you started out?

Wow, only one thing? I made so many mistakes it’s not funny. I am pretty aggressive, and I love trying big, macro changes because that is the way to learn quickly. I really wish I had an education in the complexity of this world before I began. So many people think that you build an email campaign, hit send, and everything else takes care of itself. As we all know, spam is a billion dollar business, so the level of sophistication in email delivery is really stunning. I just had no idea about that when I started down this path.

4. Think of a recent marketing email you received… did they knock it out of the park, or do you think they missed the mark? Who was it (or what industry) and what did they get right or wrong?

A recent client that comes to mind. When we first started working together, their emails were going straight to spam, even from their personal Inboxes!  And this was happening even though their email was “whitelisted” and approved at many of their partner institutions. However, like most companies, these partners were managing their email through Google Apps. This was part of the problem – even though the partners wanted to receive the communications from my client, they couldn’t, because complex algorithms determine what email lands in the inbox, and what goes to spam. Fortunately, we were able to correct the problems, and some of their recent emails have had open rates over 92%. The point of the story is that email is complicated – even when you have an invitation from a mail server – and approved content… there are just many parts of the puzzle to keep up with. Sometimes it’s simply better to outsource your email marketing to a company that specializes in email deliverability, since the effects of spam placement and junk placement can  shut a business down overnight.  As all email marketing companies know –  it’s so much harder to correct a problem with an ISP than it is to do things correctly the first time around!

5. What’s the one question you wish people would ask because it’s the most important thing people must know? (And what’s that awesome answer you have at the ready?)

One problem I seem to encounter with clients is that they don’t even know where to begin. They read something online about this or that, and then they hear the mantra of “social media, post to social media” and they come to us with no clear plan of action or goals they want to accomplish. So I guess the question I like is, “What do you think we should focus on, and why”. I usually am able to find the low hanging fruit in terms of increasing revenue, areas where we can give them some quick wins in their online marketing or marketing strategy. This allows me to build some trust with them, so when I suggest longer term strategies, they are confident in me. I kinda feel that as long as I can find ways to make them more money, they will want to keep doing business with me 🙂  In general, we place a lot of emphasis on building a list of customers, and establish a consistent email marketing strategy. Unlike social media platforms, which are really “rented property”, your email list is a tangible business asset that you own. No Facebook advertising change can affect that, no Google or SEO algorithm update can ever take that away from you.

6. How can people connect with you?

Probably the best way is via email. I use texting as a primary means of communication, but an email immediately gives me more information than a text. From it,  I can check their domain, see the email sending info, perhaps get a feel for their brand, etc. This way, before we even talk, I often can guess where the business needs help or how we can add value and help boost ROI.
